It’s a gathering of clansmen in parliament

KUALA LUMPUR: It’s not uncommon for the children to join the family business, even if it is politics. And the new parliament has quite a number of family groups.

The prime example is on the government side, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his son-in-law, the new Member of Parliament for Rembau, Khairy Jamaluddin.

Also on the government side are the scions of two families whose political roots go back to the founding of the nation. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Sembrong MP and Umno Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein are cousins.

Backing up these two dynamic duos are the Ong brothers — MCA president and Kulai MP Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting and Tanjong Malim MP Datuk Ong Ka Chuan.

The opposition benches will see a number of family groups taking their places as well.

The new Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar is the eldest daughter of Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and party president Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who retained the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat.

Joining them will be the Democratic Action party father-son team of Lim Kit Siang and Lim Guan Eng.

Kit Siang successfully defended his Ipoh Timur seat against MCA novice Liew Mun Hon; while Guan Eng is back in parliament after a two-term absence representing Bagan.

Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh will be joined by both his sons. His eldest, Jagdeep Singh Deo, won the Datuk Keramat state seat in Penang, while his second son, Gobind Singh Deo, became the Puchong member of parliament
